Vice President- Technical
Position Overview:
As the Vice President — Technical, you will build the technical department
from the ground up for an emerging shipping company. Your expertise and leadership will be instrumental in ensuring the seamless operation, maintenance, and compliance of our vessels to execute successfully on our government contracts. Experience in tanker technical management preferred.
Responsibilities:
- Design and implement a staffing plan for the company’s technical
management department and provide strategic leadership and
guidance to the technical team, overseeing the smooth operation of all
vessels.
- Manage third-party technical managers and consultants hired to
perform aspects of vessel technical management, including whole-
vessel management or elements of vessel management (such as
crewing agents, outsourced purchasing agents and other third parties),
as well as consultants hired to develop internal systems and
procedures.
- Manage and optimize vessel maintenance, repairs, customer
modifications and dry-docking activities, ensuring adherence to
industry regulations, class requirements, customer requirements and
company standards.
- Oversee and support development and implementation of strategic
purchasing and preventive maintenance programs, including
implementation of proper IT infrastructure (in particular the company’s
instance of ABS Wavesight), to manage costs, minimize downtime and
enhance vessel reliability.
- Assess the technical condition of proposed new vessel acquisitions and
advise on the feasibility of potential vessels for the intended project.
- Monitor and analyze fleet performance data, identifying opportunities
for efficiency improvements and cost optimization.
- Ensure strict compliance with international maritime regulations,
industry best practices, and company policies.
- Oversee and support development and implementation of safety,
environmental and quality management systems in compliance with
applicable regulations and industry standards. Drive continuous
improvement of these management systems to enhance safety
standards, environmental sustainability, and operational efficiency.
- Develop and manage budgets for the technical department,
monitoring expenditures, and identifying cost-saving opportunities.
- Cultivate and maintain effective relationships with shipyards, suppliers,
third-party consultants, government customers and classification
societies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Naval Architecture, Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related field.
- US Coast Guard Chief Engineer’s license (unlimited) and valid medical certificate preferred; Tanker PIC and STCW endorsements nice to have.
- Proven track record in senior group level technical roles within the shipping industry, with experience developing and establishing policies and procedures.
- Strong knowledge of marine engineering principles, vessel operations, and relevant regulations (IMO, SOLAS, MARPOL), ideally with a focus within tanker management.
- Experience with US Coast Guard reflagging regulations (ACP and MSP) and has successfully led multiple reflagging evolutions.
- Exceptional leadership and team management skills, with a demonstrated ability to hire, inspire and guide a diverse technical team.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and decision-making skills, with a knack for analyzing complex situations and implementing effective solutions.
- Project management expertise, enabling the prioritization and successful management of multiple tasks concurrently.
- Proficiency in relevant software applications and tools for technical and fleet management.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Possesses or is eligible to obtain a personal security clearance at the Secret level.
